Over 70% of market vendors in Fiji are women but this was never considered when building municipal markets however Markets for Change through The Commission of the Status of Women has changed this for women market vendors in Fiji.
This was highlighted by the Minister For Women Mereseini Vuniwaqa, when asked in Parliament to enlighten Parliament on the role of The Commission of the Status of Women.
Vuniwaqa says women travel to sell their produce in markets from all over Fiji.
Vuniwaqa says apart from a place to sleep, the project is also empowering women market vendors in relation to leadership skills however there is a lot yet still to be done in regards to gender equality.
The Minister says another project that was highlighted at the commissioning of the Commission of the Status of Women was the Barefoot College which will be built in Macuata in Vanua Levu.
She says the idea of the college is to empower women living in rural communities to become solar engineers.
