A recent report shows only 8% of working parents surveyed currently use a childcare service.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Employment, Parveen Bala while speaking at the Launch of the International Finance Corporation Childcare Report.

Bala highlighted that discussions around this report will contribute to the work towards creating supportive workplaces for women and men.

Bala also highlighted that government is looking to provide an enabling set of policies for the provision of childcare services for children under five years of age.

The Employment Minister says that government also recognizes the significance of this study and has taken a proactive step with the recommendation for a National Taskforce on Early Childhood Care.

He says the process to setup this taskforce under the National Coordinating Committee on Children chaired by the Ministry of Women is already under way.

Bala stressed that the objective of the taskforce will be to identify and prioritize the government’s response to the growing demand for childcare services.

He says that it is also a “win‑win” situation for employers and employees, as it provides a safety net that is enabling in producing the right conditions for a sustainable work environment for workers, families, employers and for the nation at large.

He says that childcare when provided in an accessible and sustainable manner offers long‑lasting social economic and wellness benefits for children and their parents.
