A 14-year-old boy who raped a 7-year-old boy in a settlement in Suva in October last year has been detained at the Fiji Juvenile Rehabilitation and Development Centre.

High Court Judge, Justice Vinsent Perera has ruled that the juvenile will be kept at the Juvenile Rehabilitation Centre for one year and the Centre has to take steps to include the boy in an appropriate counselling program.

Justice Perera has also directed the Director of the Fiji Juvenile Rehabilitation and Development Centre to decide whether to keep the juvenile offender under his care at the expiry of the one year period.

The juvenile’s father has also been ordered to pay a fine of $120 to the Suva High Court as the parents have neglected in their duties to properly look after the child.

The court was told that the complainant who was a class two student was playing hide and seek with his friends when the 14-year-old boy called him to bring his phone so they could watch movies.

The 14-year-old later took the boy inside a room and raped him.

The juvenile had pleaded guilty to a count of rape.
