National Federation Party leader, Professor Biman Prasad claimed in parliament last night that after the Essential National Industries Decree came in, a bank reduced the minimum salary of bank workers from about $12,000 to about $8000 in 2013.
While speaking on his motion that a Special Parliamentary Committee be set up to look into the banking, superannuation and financial services industry in Fiji and its impacts on consumers, Prasad says the banks are now looking at pay increases for workers.
Meanwhile, the National Secretary for the Fiji Bank and Finance Sector Employees Union, Sailesh Naidu says when the decree came in, the banks changed their salary structure.
Naidu says they have managed to negotiate pay rises for workers of two major banks in Fiji.
He says they are continuing negotiations with other banks.
Naidu says people may be starting at about $9,500 now.
1,500 workers from 19 different financial institutions including 5 major banks are part of the union.
We are currently speaking to the banks.
