The Fiji Sugar Corporation is considering giving compensations to farmers affected.

However, the volume of stand over cane is being established before any decision is made on a request for the compensation of stand over cane.

This follows a submission by the Sugar Cane Growers Council to the FSC and Sugar Ministry.

FSC Chief Executive Officer, Abdul Khan said no farmers have been compensated at this stage, however, considerations have been given to farmers affected.  

Khan said FSC are presently establishing the quantum of stand over cane and once this is done, they will then consider any form of payment.

Khan adds they will talk to all the stakeholders before making the final decision.  

Sugar Cane Growers Council CEO Sundresh Chetty said there is a need for farmers to be compensated to sustain their livelihoods.  

According to SCGC, the estimated stand over cane last year was 50, 000 tons.
