Under the amended Litter Decree, if you are caught throwing rubbish in a public area by a litter officer, you will be told to pick the rubbish immediately.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Local Government, Urban Development, Housing and Environment, Taina Tagicakabau said this decree authorizes a litter officer to require a person who intentionally litters in a public area to do instant community service in or around that particular area.
She said the Litter Decree has been amended to effectively minimize the habit of littering and the enforcement of the decree rests with the city and town councils, rural local authorities and appointed litter officers.
Fiji Police Force personnel will also act as Litter Prevention Officers.
A reform put in place is that of a Special Magistrate to hear tribunal issues dealing with litter offenders.
