Child support maintenance payments, traffic and other fines imposed in Court can now be made using Vodafone’s M-Paisa service.
The Chief Registrar with the High Court Irani Wakishta Arachchi said the police and judiciary department have the authority to arrest and remand people in custody who do not pay their fines, however they would like to avoid coming to that.
In 2007, outstanding judiciary fines amounted to around $10 million which was 6% of Government’s outstanding debts.
The judiciary fine service will be at no extra charge for M-Paisa users when making payments.
