Former Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase has decided to withdraw his appeal against sentence and conviction.

The matter was called for hearing in the Supreme Court today where Qarase’s lawyer Tupou Draunidalo informed Chief Justice Anthony Gates, Judge Justice Prabhaharan Kumararatne and Justice Sathya Hettige that they have decided to withdraw their appeal.

Justice Gates granted the leave to withdraw the application.

Qarase was sent to prison for one year in August 2012 after being convicted of six counts of abuse of office and three counts of discharge of duty with respect to property in which he has a private interest.
