Permanent Secretary for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Dr. Josefa Koroivueta says some people who were ineligible for the Homes‑Care initiative have returned their cards.
Koroivueta says people realized that it is a serious offence to defraud the government.
He is expected to later reveal the number of people who have returned the cards.
He says producing false information to gain financial advantage is a crime under the False Information Act.
Koroivueta says that the advisory counselors and turaqa ni koros were present at the processing queue which served as a deterrent to the people who were trying to defraud the government.
Meanwhile, 34,437 families from Sigatoka to Rakiraki and Labasa have so far been assisted under Homes‑Care initiative which cost about $40 million.
Koroivueta adds that most beneficiaries are from Ba.
He says that Ba was the worst affected during the recent flooding caused by Cyclone Keni and Josie.
