The Warriors have released star halfback Shaun Johnson from the final year of his contract. 

CEO Cameron George said in a statement today Johnson is free agent "effective immediately".

In a statement, George revealed that Warriors Head coach, Stephen Kearney, and Recruitment Manager, Peter O’Sullivan met with Johnson and his manager Peter Brown, during which Johnson clearly demonstrated to that he didn’t want to be at the club in 2019.

Johnson played 162 games for the Warriors after debuting in Round 13 against the Sydney Roosters in 2011.

He has since gone on to become the club's top point‑scorer with 919.

The Sharks are reportedly ready to make a move for Johnson, with money now at their disposal following the shock departure of Valentine Holmes to the NFL.     

The 2019 NRL season will kick off at Melbourne's AAMI Park on Thursday, March 14.
