Fiji’s petroleum imports grew from around $400M in 2004 to a little over $1.2B in 2008.
While opening the National Energy Summit today, Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said Fiji’s energy consumption over this four year period is quite alarming and is further compounded by the current state of the world’s oil resources.
Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji’s shift to sustainable energy supply is critical.
He said development of a new national Energy Policy to overcome the country’s vulnerability is important for stakeholders.
The Prime Minister added that in reducing our reliance on imported fuels, the Fiji Electricity Authority is aiming to have 90% of power generation from renewable sources by 2015 - a target which is supported by Government.
