“I tried to save my household items as rising waters entered my house.”
This is the sentiment shared by Wailea resident Sushila Kumari after flood waters entered their house and destroyed some of their household items yesterday.
Kumari said they did not move out of their house as they thought the flood waters will not enter their house in Wailea, Vatuwaqa.
She said at around 1pm yesterday, flood waters suddenly entered their house and they tried to save as many items as they could.
The mother of four said she and her son slept on a rug which they saved last night.
She said her other children and mother slept at her sister’s house.
Another resident Ratu Dulilomaloma said they have been living in Wailea for 14 years and this is the first time ever that flood waters have entered their house.
Dulilomaloma said they remained at home because they thought the flood waters will not enter their house.
He said flood waters destroyed their furniture, carpets and some kitchen utensils.
It is clean up time in Wailea as people are trying to get back to normal times after the floods yesterday.
