Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan will resume her full‑time duties as Fiji’s permanent representative to the United Nations in Geneva effective immediately.

This has been announced by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

In a statement, Bainimarama adds that the role of Fiji's Chief Negotiator for the COP23 Presidency will be passed to Fiji’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Luke Daunivalu.

He says that Daunivalu will hold the negotiating role for the rest of Fiji’s term as COP President until Fiji hands over to Poland at COP24 in December.

The Prime Minister acknowledged Ambassador Shameem Khan for her immense contribution to the success of Fiji’s COP campaign and looks forward to her continuing to build on some of the diplomatic initiatives Fiji has been pursuing in Geneva in the field of human rights and closer engagement with the various nations and agencies based there.

Bainimarama also highlighted that Ambassador Daunivalu is a qualified replacement and Bainimarama is confident that the leadership and teamwork Daunivalu will bring to the role of Chief Negotiator will strengthen Fiji’s campaign for maximum ambition and maximum climate action all the way to COP24 and beyond.
